Before colonisation, Africa was not divided into states. People were organised into various groups, communities, or societies, often based on shared language, culture, or ancestry. These groups did not have formal national borders.
During colonisation, European powers divided Africa into colonial states, creating borders that did not align with the existing social and cultural divisions. Post-colonisation, these states were largely retained.
